(listen, listen, sometimes you hate someone so much that if they die, you'll be even madder, let them lie and deny that they're like, not that disgusted by each other... but fuck-- that's a kotone. the way he high-pitched yelps, sitting up immediately, with the jacket in attempts to cover up the pj's. she'll see, however, that the only part of him that isn't covered in bandages is half his feet.
ah, well. there's a reason. the reason is why he's bleeding here and there, of course. ah, well, fuck, shit, fuck, crap, shit, fuck.)
... Eh-- Koto-chan... How was the trip...? Floating must have been fun. Ah, not with Chuuya, though. This is not fun at all.
(because chuuya doesn't let him breathe when it's like this. he's positively screwed. his hands leave the jacket on his lap, before they clasp under his chin.)
Of course I do! In that book I have, they say it only hurts a little bit! I was looking forward to it! You're early, Chuuya, too early!! Also, why are you being mean to my house. I really liked it...! It was very, very, very nice.
(no bitch it was a shipping container in the middle of a chemical wasteland that not even bacteria wanted to live in, you had basically nothing in there, it was a shit place to live please get over it)
Actually, he's been really nice to me. It might have been fun if we weren't looking for you. Nice pajamas.
[She's so annoyed at Dazai, actually. She'd been worried that something was wrong, that he was seriously hurt or had made good on his thoughts about dying, but finding him like this in a hole? It's a relief, but she's still kind of mad at him. It's inconsiderate, first of all.
But she watches Chuuya digging in his bag, guessing that he has what he needs. She keeps her own on her shoulder, just in case, but ready to step in if he needs anything from her.]
Fuck you, I give great rides. Not that you'd know. And sorry to tell you, but hypothermia is supposed to hurt like hell at first.
[Do not bring up his teenage driving skills. He's a responsible driver now! But don't slander him in front of Kotone, she seems like a good girl.
Chuuya pulls out a wrapped package he promptly lobs at Dazai's face-- an apple, some fish jerky, some bread buns. Easy things to snack on and nibble, nothing too heavy for a booze soaked stomach. The jerky might be a well aimed pun, but Chuuya will never tell. After the pack of food comes a thermos of fresh water, set down nicely because giving Dazai a black eye right now is pointless.
What follows is a bag of first aid supplies: clean bandages and various other wound care necessities.]
Early or not, you're done here. You're coming back and getting a shower, you reek like a drunk bum.
You can't expect me to sleep with all that on, it's only comfortable at work-- also, ew, Koto-chan, he's gotten to you...
(look at how he's treating dazai, is that how a nice man acts!!!!!! -- ah, yeah, in this situation, it might be. kotone being mad at him, though, well. doesn't bother him so much. not when he's drunk, and not when he's a piece of shit.)
Only at first, see, only at first! I've tried to compress myself in a drum, that hurt way more than this. Eh-- but I don't wanna go, and I don't wanna eat.
(but even so, he offers his arm for chuuya to deal with the bandages. he knows he won't remove them and traumatize kotone with what's underneath it, he trusts the other ew ew ew.)
When he makes me come all the way out to the middle of nowhere, I'll stop calling him nice.
[He literally did not make her do anything, but she still feels obligated. She hangs back, once again letting Chuuya take charge. It almost reminds her of Akihiko and Shinjiro, except those two clearly liked each other in spite of the fights and arguments they'd have, and these two, well... hm. They sure are something.
She watches the way he offers his arm to Chuuya to help bandage, glancing over Dazai's face as if there might be anything she could read there.]
Do you want me to watch the front while you take care of him? I don't mind.
[She's offering privacy, if he wants it. Offering to Chuuya, mind, not Dazai. He doesn't get a say.]
Don't worry Kotone-chan, you're way more deserving of my manners than a mackerel like this.
[Chuuya can't quite hold back his pleased little smirk at Kotone's words. Ha! See? She thinks Chuuya's nice and is giving Dazai a little verbal asskicking.
He starts unwrapping a roll of bandages, tucking one end around Dazai's arm before he gets to work. Dazai already knows he won't remove these here, there are some boundaries he won't push with Dazai, and this is one of them. He knows the bandages don't come off around other people. Chuuya's only seen bits and pieces because of... well, times like this. But don't think he didn't notice the lack of action regarding anything else. Ugh.]
You've got one free hand Dazai, either eat something or I'll have to force feed you, and neither of us will enjoy that.
[With that warning given, he glances over his shoulder to Kotone, offering her a small smile.] If you could do that, it'd be a big help. This guy is like a grumpy toddler at times like this, he's very distracting.
[And. Y'know. Dragons. That is still fucking wild, frankly.]
Stop trying to steal my mentees!! What's next, are you going to get Atsushi?? Kyouka?? Ugh, un-beli-veable.
(bitch, you left, and he's looking at chuuya like he could murder him with his eyes only. motherfucker. stealing his damn kiddos!!!! and making him eat!! and coming into his room!!! good thing chuuya's focused on his arm, because his knife is absolutely picked, because someone's a great thief, whether sober or not! dazai's got very light touches, after all. don't force-feed him!!!!)
Noooo, Koto-chan, don't leave me with him!!! I wanna die by the hands of someone taller!!!!
[Huge toddler! She rolls her eyes at the idea that she could be stolen, as if she isn't capable of either making her own decisions or talking to both of them individually without taking sides.]
Well, they always say beggars can't be choosers, Dazai-san.
[She gives him an innocent little smile before nodding to Chuuya, shrugging off her own bag and leaving it nearby.]
There are some more bandages and some tea and cookies in there. You can keep them or give them to him, I don't mind either way.
[She doesn't know what's good for drunk people to eat; she'd just packed what she'd had to hand when she learned Chuuya was going to go out looking for him. But with the bag dropped off, she heads back to the entrance, ready to keep watch for-- anything. Dragons? Monsters? Weird ghosts from the forest that sounded like Shadows luring people into Tartarus? Who knows.]
[Chuuya doesn't even notice his knife getting filched, all his focus on making sure the fresh bandages are tight enough to control any bleeding. They'll need to get changed regardless when he gets Dazai back to the inn, because he wasn't kidding about Dazai needing a bath, but for now this should work. He shoots Dazai a sharp look, a silent demand to eat something, damn it, but once Kotone is outside he lets out a sigh.] Eat and drink what you like, as long as it isn't booze, but do it. You are gonna pass the fuck out if you don't, and the kid's been worried about you.
[Bodies aren't meant to deal with blood loss and obscene amounts of alcohol with nothing else to put in them, damn it.]
You left a fucking bloody mess in the bed, you asshole. I thought the rat or the clown might have killed you, for a second.
(the knife goes very skillfully under the blankets. it might be needed if chuuya does want to force-feed him. he knows they basically have no boundaries, but his stomach hurts!! he'll eat in a second, at least, let him gather up some strength. he just woke up, goddamnit.
there's only a sigh. a part of him is wondering if chuuya didn't just warn her dazai's an ass and this is a normal occurrence, so there was no actual need to worry so much. come on, you love shit talking dazai, did you not???
a bloody me-- ah.)
Oh. No, please, you think I'd let that? Nikol came to visit because he was bored, and he gripped my arm for a second, that's all.
(nikol, seriously, dazai? he's looking at the entrance for a little moment, a sigh towards kotone. she's already attached, isn't she? chuuya, please, tell her how much dazai sucks...)
[He won't force feed him if Dazai makes any move to eat on his own before all this bandaging is done, but he's very serious about Dazai needing to eat. His stomach needs something in it besides alcohol before they get moving.
Chuuya sullenly works on wrapping Dazai's arms, letting out a huff of annoyance at Dazai's denial.
Nikol, huh?] I said for a second, asshole. Obviously you hadn't been murdered once I thought about it. Nice to know you're getting cuddly with the clown, though.
[Of course Dazai is. He's not surprised in the least, frankly.
But Chuuya follows Dazai's gaze for a moment, the expression on his face growing hard and annoyed. Predictable. So predictable it's infuriating.] If you wanna sabotage her opinion of you, do it yourself. I am not crushing a kid's hopes for you. Aren't you supposed to be trying to be good and shit, anyway?
"Getting" and "got" are two different things. Nikol hates touching me, he just wanted someone to annoy.
(which, well, it's understandable. 'no longer human' can be daunting, and it's not like dazai can ever turn it off, even to save his own life. good that kotone didn't summon anything for nothing - he did tell her he's pretty much immune to any ability to ever exist.
but he's silent at the rest of the jabbing, and he weakly kicks chuuya's shin as a response. get out of his brain, asshole.)
Not surprised, you're an octopus when you get going.
[No, he knows exactly what Dazai means. He knows touch is a weird issue with Dazai when you're an ability user. It's pure vulnerability for most, and Chuuya has seen how Akutagawa hesitates to fucking bathe after how hard Dazai drilled the dangers of being unarmed into his skull.
Just for that kick, Chuuya tugs the bandages a bit too tight for a moment before he affixes the end on Dazai's arm, reaching for the other arm once he's done.]
She called me by the way. She was worried about you, so make sure to apologize later.
[Another barb, and Chuuya's about to continue bandaging Dazai's arm when his gaze falls a little lower, on the jacket that's far too short to be that tacky tan coat Dazai wears all the time.
(SIR THERE'S A VERY DEEP CUT IN THERE, ouch, see!!! mean!! but he gives out the other arm, there's also legs, calfs, but they'll have time to stitch it all at home, just let them be a little extra covered, not to raise too much suspicion.
there's just a 'tsk' from him, because!! he'll apologize, but not because chuuya told him so, it's because he wants to!!
and then the attitude flies out the window. the arm that has just been bandaged falls to the jacket, a hand gripping on it.)
[So maybe Dazai should behave a little more so this process can be a little less painful for the both of them!
That being said, he is being relatively gentle, for the most part. He knows later is going to suck enough for Dazai, because cleaning all this and stitching him up is going to fucking hurt. But Chuuya is Determined, because he does in fact care about Dazai's wellbeing no matter what he says otherwise.
He pauses in his bandaging, silent for a long moment as he takes in the sight of that jacket. The dried blood. The blood, he thinks, that might not be Dazai's, if the jacket is Oda's.
Dazai probably wouldn't want to dirty a memento of the man he loved like that. So that must mean...]
Fucking hell. [The words come out rough, before Chuuya lets out a low exhale.] How'd it get here?
(he doesn't want the sour reminder, not really, but if he ignores the smell of blood, he can smell nicotine, curry, whiskey, lupin, and oda, so, this jacket is never going to be washed. it's not like he's been pining over this for years on end, and changed his entire self because of it, not at all.
but that's the question. dazai has no idea. oda's been dead for years. the blood was not so dry when he found it. it's fucking with his brain a little bit. the cherry on top of it all.)
[Chuuya is silent at that, well aware this is Dazai shutting down a topic that feels too sharp to touch right now, too intense, too much. And that's... that's fine, really. Dazai doesn't want to talk about it, and Chuuya is certain he's not the one to talk to about it.
Right now, he needs to focus on taking care of Dazai, so that's what he'll do.
Questions can wait, or be forgotten. He focuses on bandaging up Dazai's arms, not even choosing to comment on the choice of wording.]
Give me a bit while I finish this up, and then we can go. Try to at least drink something not booze while I do?
[It's not a negotiation. Chuuya is going to take care of Dazai regardless, but he'd appreciate it nonetheless.]
(dazai's an ass, but even he has limits. dazai knows exactly what oda's death entailed for chuuya. it meant he lost dazai, and a series of consequences came from it, all falling onto his lap because of his disappearing act. he told chuuya enough - that he loved the man. while dazai is not rather empathetic towards people's deaths, that one stung. the mafia stung. everything fell apart for him, and well. chuuya was left alone picking up the pieces, was he not?
chuuya is the last person on earth who deserves to listen to all this. if he wants to, he can ask later, but dazai won't pick the topic up. he's cruel, but not like this.
so, just as a means to speed this whole thing up so he can go back to sleep again, he'll meet chuuya halfway. a bite to the apple, to cooperate.)
[And while Chuuya can be an asshole himself, he's not so much of an asshole as to question Dazai on Oda when he knows he hasn't sorted out how he feels about everything that happened. It's more than just Dazai leaving, really. It's the fact that the one time Dazai lost someone he loved, he ran. But for Chuuya?
The people he loved had always ended up being disposable to Dazai. To the mafia as a whole. And Chuuya had justified it to himself as just how things were, just what this life meant, that they'd all accepted that choice. The organization continued on, and everything was for the organization, the city.
That Dazai of all people had run because of loss had thrown all Chuuya's feelings into disarray, and he wasn't ready to confront that tangled mess, yet.
The topic of Kotone is a welcome one. Dazai choosing to cooperate is just as welcome, and some tension eases in Chuuya's shoulders when he takes a bite of that apple.] Yeah... I think that'd be good. She started to enjoy it after a bit, y'know.
[She deserved a chance to properly enjoy herself while flying, rather than worry the whole time.]
You know I don't. You never take me flying. Thankless.
(just a joke, to lighten the mood, because both know it's not a denial on chuuya's part, but an inability altogether. 'no longer human' can be a wonderful thing, but it also strips him of opportunities ever so often.
he's definitely going to ask him to take kotone home via gravity, however, he'll stay put. there's no way he'll have energy or time to find himself another hole in that meantime, and they don't need to all suffer the walk on the way back.
but on the topic of thankfulness, dazai just looks at chuuya for a second, there. he doesn't need to say it. thank you for the space, thank you for trying to understand.)
[It's just as much a joke as Dazai's own words, meant to tease, not to pick a fight. Frankly if he could use his ability on Dazai, it would have made the aftermath of some missions a hell of a lot easier. Too bad, really.
He'll probably demand a promise that Dazai behave in exchange for returning Kotone home first, but he's aware enough that making her walk home with them both would be meaningless. But the choice will be hers: He's not going to make her accept a lift from him, regardless of how Dazai feels on it.
The gratitude of that look, however, is uncomfortable in a way. All of this is as much for Chuuya's sake as Dazai's, and it's not something he's willing to verbalize. He focuses instead on wrapping Dazai's legs, nudging him when he needs him to shift so he can have better access, his head bent to his task.]
Oh, so like you every day about literally anything else?
(and this is exactly why when kotone suggests he talks to chuuya, he will cry laughing. they never speak, not really. it's the freaking double black hivemind. did chuuya just rip dazai a new one without dazai saying one word to entice it, down to the very details of his thoughts? oh, yes, he did. dazai despises it, as useful as it is to both of them, and sometimes, to the entirety of japan! and Yokohama!
fuck chuuya, though.
so, instead of bitching like he normally would, he'll just focus his efforts onto eating, letting chuuya do his thing while he shifts as needed. walking back is going to take a while. he'll firmly tell kotone to go safely, because he'll need a few breaks, probably.)
