CONTRACT PAYMENT: A return to life in Yokohama, alternatively a chance to kick Dazai Osamu's ass for getting him drowned
QUESTIONNAIRE:
- What does family mean to you and who do you consider a part of your family?
For Chuuya, family isn't about blood at all, it's about where you belong. This is most strongly illustrated in canon when he is given a chance to reunite with what is likely his blood parents: He chooses to take a look at them from afar, but ultimately never introduces himself. As he tells Mori, to him the Mafia is his family, the place he truly considers his home. Every person there is important to Chuuya, and it's shown that he mourns comrades lost, in spite of the fact death is a significant part of the job risks. He might be capable of terrible acts of violence, but he is not a distant leader like some mafia executives, instead someone who cares for those around him.
-How important is loyalty to you? What does it take to earn your loyalty? What extents are you willing to go through to maintain loyalty, and respect the loyalty others might have invested in you?
Loyalty is one of the most important things there is, to Chuuya. In some ways it is also his greatest fault, because he will devote himself utterly to someone or something if they truly gain his loyalty, regardless of risks or complications. This might be because he has no background or memories tying him to a family or identity prior to age 8: The people around him are his family, his life and purpose. It also might be because he was put into a 'leadership' position at a young age, expected to protect the Sheep due to his powerful ability.
What it takes to gain his loyalty is varied, but ultimately what it comes down to is emotion with Chuuya. If he is made to feel like he belongs (the sheep), or offered an answer he needs (the mafia, initially), he will do whatever it takes for the people he has sworn himself to. In present day, he would risk life and limb without hesitation if his boss, Mori asked it of him. Likewise, he repays loyalty in kind: He is a devoted leader who cares about his subordinates in the mafia, looks out for their wellbeing, and mourns them if they die.
-How do you react to betrayal? How severe must a betrayal be for you to consider it such?
Betrayal is a harsh thing for Chuuya to deal with, and he does not deal with it well. He is the type of man who holds grudges and feels deeply, but is also the type who struggles to set down the emotional attachment that once was.
When the sheep betrayed him, Chuuya chose to blame himself for this fact. Ultimately, later on, Chuuya saved the life of and made up with the one who stabbed him (quite literally) in the back, Shirase. As Adam, who had been observing Chuuya throughout the Storm Bringer novel put it: Chuuya is the kind of person who will never abandon those he cares for, even if they betray him. It is simply the kind of person he is.
Meanwhile, Dazai Osamu, his former mission partner, left the Mafia when they were 18. Though Chuuya had always claimed to have hated him intensely there was still a bond there, and Chuuya resented him strongly for becoming a traitor, especially since Dazai is the one who 'recruited' him (via blackmail) to begin with. He will loudly proclaim how happy he was Dazai left, in spite of his expression says otherwise. But when it comes down to it, Chuuya still trusts the man with his life, because he is incapable of truly abandoning the bonds he once had, even if the bridges have been well and truly burnt from the other side.
- Your Faction leader, not just your boss but the leader, has asked you to carry out a hit. The target is a non-affiliated public leader, well-liked by the people of the city. Do you carry it out? Why or why not?
Assuming he believes in his faction, he'd carry it out without hesitation. Sometimes people need to die for the good of the organization and the people in it, and he understands that intimately. Murder is not something he is unfamiliar with, and neither are hit jobs.
Probably for some people this would be a request to hesitate about, but Chuuya isn't one of those people. He's been killing for a variety of reasons since before his age was double digits, and this would be just one more job. If anything, he takes comfort and a certain amount of pride in his ability to resolve 'problems' for his group, regardless of obstacles.
POWERS & ABILITIES: Chuuya's main 'power' is called for the tainted sorrow, an ability that allows him to manipulate the gravity of anything he touches. He can alter the force of gravity on fairly anything, people and himself included, with devastating effect. This is something he uses primarily uses in an offensive manner to enhance his unarmed fighting style, though it can also be used defensively: He's able to rip up concrete, break walls or stall bullets in their path.... or shoot said bullets back at opponents. He's considered one of the strongest ability users in Yokohama canonically, though he has a few weaknesses: mainly that the requirement for touch makes his ability fairly useless on non-solids such as water or gas. His canonpoint illustrates this, as he is left drowning in an an ability shielded room filling with water, helpless to escape.
His ability also had a far more deadly form, what he's dubbed 'corruption'. When Chuuya unleashes the true form of his ability his power grows exponentially and no longer requires him to touch things to use it, but the downside is that he has no control over his actions, destroying all in his path. It's also a short lived thing: Chuuya will die if he maintains corruption for more than a few minutes, his body torn apart by the force of gravity on his own body. It's essentially a berserker state that he will never use unless circumstances are dire, and certainly not without someone around to nullify his power.
In terms of his ability use, I am quite happy to have it all nerfed as much as mods like. Chuuya would struggle since he's always had his ability as far as he can remember, but that's part of the fun for me. Feel free to remove his ability wholesale at first, and he can regain the basic gravity manipulation perhaps later on via rewards. He would not aim to regain the upper level of his ability (corruption) because as powerful as it is, it would kill him to use it without backup that can nullify it.
In terms of physical ability, Chuuya is known as the top martial artist in the port mafia. He excels in physical unarmed combat, and is fairly decent with a knife or gun, though he most often uses his ability instead of an actual gun. He's also a Mafia executive with all the skills that comes with: Knowledge of illegal trade and smuggling, torture methods, how the criminal world works.
SUITABILITY: Besides Chuuya being an adult, in his canon he is also an executive in the Port Mafia: a rank that is not earned through playing nicely, especially at the young age of 22. Crime, violence, murder and brutality are part of his day to day work, as well as smuggling of a wide variety of illegal goods. He's never actually lived what would be called a 'blue collar' life, having joined the mafia at 15, and prior to that living as part of a gang on the streets. Suffice to say, he's seen it all when it comes to the shadier aspects of society, and done quite a bit of it himself. He'd probably feel right at home in Jigokucho, in some ways.
FACTION SUITABILITY:
Shuten: Chuuya aligns fairly well with Shuten morality. The Mafia in canon is very much 'might makes right', enforcing their control of Yokohama's underworld with blood and violence, blackmail and underhanded deals. But they also value their community: Yokohama and it's people are theirs to protect, their home and place of business both. They will crush any threat to their city without mercy, and Chuuya's own morality aligns with this: His loyalty is to his people and home, and anyone who threatens them will face the crushing might of gravity.
He's also rather fond of drinking and partying, because he's more than a bit of a wild guy. And he's certainly not afraid to use force in any job he is placed in.
Tamamo: Chuuya has a bit of a hedonist streak, being someone who plays just as hard as he works. After a youth spent wondering if he was truly human or just a shell of a personality, and likewise rejecting any enjoyment of many freedoms and pleasures for it, he has embraced his own humanity in a multitude of ways, both material and immaterial. He savors his life after years of feeling detached from his existence, and is deeply emotional, on both the positive and negative ends of the spectrum. He greatly values freedom and his ability to follow his heart and soul, precisely because he is now able to acknowledge it is a soul, regardless of how human he might or might not be.
Sutoku: While Chuuya isn't a genius or anything of the sort, he was trained in the art of business deals, information gathering and building alliances by his mentor, Kouyou Ozaki. He knows finances as well, having handled some of the major smuggling operations the Port Mafia had worked with skill and aplomb.
Enma: Though Chuuya does value the safety of Yokohama in canon, he does not particularly value the law. For him, his morals are not defined by what is legal, but what he feels is right. I cannot in right mind say he would do well in law enforcement, nor would he thrive at a desk job, though he is capable of doing paperwork (though he quite dislikes it).
